Mrs Akufo-Addo rejects new allowances to be paid to her; refunds GHc899,097 since 2017

Ghana's First Lady, Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo

Ghana’s First Lady, Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo, in consultation with her husband President Akufo-Addo, has decided to refund all monies paid to her as allowances from the date of the President’s assumption of office.

A press statement signed by the Communications Director at the office of the First Lady, Korkor Bleboo, said it starts from January 7th, 2021 to date, amounting to GHc899,097.84.

Some Ghanaians are incensed after it emerged that the wife of the President, Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo, and the wife of his Vice, Samira Bawumia, are to receive emoluments just like cabinet ministers.

Some have directly chastised the Akufo-Addo administration for the development but government officials have explained that the payment of the said allowances is not a new phenomenon and that it was only being formalised by the current government.

The First Lady has also decided not to accept any money that has been allocated to be paid to her pursuant to the recommendations of the Ntiamoah-Baidu Committee.

Mrs. Akufo-Addo noted that these are based on a pure personal decision without prejudice to the rights of others.
