Nearly $1 billion has so far been paid to three Independent Power Producers (IPPs) alone for power Ghanaians have never used because of John Dramani Mahama.
Yes, just three! Those who are busily shouting that the Akufo-Addo government was reckless in allowing a $138 million judgment debt to an independent power producer for cancelling a needless take or pay contract signed by John Mahama should know that we would have paid even more for power we don’t need had the NPP not cancelled it in 2018.
Even for AKSA ($347.20m), Karpower ($359m) and Cenpower ($231.30m) who are even producing power, from 2017 to 2020, Govt paid $937.50 million for excess power. Sometimes it is cheaper to pay judgment debt than to be saddled with a contract that will kill you for decades!
