Support operations of NHIA – newly inaugurated board members charged

Governing board of the NHIA inaugurated

The Governing Board of the National Health Insurance Authority has been inaugurated with the new members charged to support the operations of the Authority and to work efficiently to help Ghana achieve Universal Health Coverage by 2030.

The inauguration presided over by the Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, saw the board members pledge to devise strategic and innovative ways of sustaining the scheme and to resolve challenges pertaining to payments to service providers.

The Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, tasked the board to develop an action plan to accelerate registration of new members unto the Scheme to ensure every Ghanaian is captured under the NHIS.

The NHIA Board, drawn from various bodies as spelt out in section three (3) of the National Health Insurance Act 2012 (ACT 852) is *chaired by Dr. Ernest K.P. Kwarko, an Obstetrician Gynaecologist with Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

Members include Mr. Kwabena Boadu Oku-Afari from the Ministry of Health; Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, Director-General of the Ghana Health Service and Dr. Justice Ofori of the National Insurance Commission.

Others are Mrs. Elizabeth Aggrey-Ampiah, of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust; Mr. Kwasi Asante, Accountancy and Finance expert, Hon. Samuel Erickson Abakah, a Legal Practitioner, Professor Christian Agyare and Dr. Isaac Charles Noble Morrison from the Pharmacy and Medical/Dental profession respectively.

Also, sworn-in were *Chief Executive of NHIA Dr. Lydia Dsane-Selby, Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye, a former Deputy Minister of Health and a health professional; Dr. Sylvester Yaw Oppong a Health Professional, Odeneho Akosua Fema Dwabeng II and Madam Joyce Konokie Zempare, both from the National Health Insurance Scheme.

Speaking on behalf of the newly sworn-in board, the Chairman, Dr. Ernest K.P. Kwarko thanked President Akufo-Addo for the confidence reposed in him and his team and pledged to work assiduously to make the NHIS a formidable Health Insurance Scheme.

He further commended the President on the composition of the board indicating that each member possesses a unique talent that will be harnessed to drive the Scheme towards its expected success.
