The Progressive Peoples Party (PPP) says President Akufo-Addo’s suggestion to rename the University of Development Studies (UDS) after former President Jerry John Rawlings is inappropriate.
This, the party maintains, is because the former President Rawlings had rejected offers by President Akufo-Addo and former President Akufo-Addo to rename the state assert after him when he was alive.
A press statement signed by the National Secretary, Paa Kow Ackon, said reveal former President Rawlings rejected the same offer in 2019 when President Akufo-Addo decided to re-name UDS and that of Ex-President Mahama to name the Offshore Cape Three Points FPSO vessel after him he rejected that as well in 2015.
Though Akufo-Addo has good intentions of renaming the University, it is still inappropriate to disregard the wishes of the Ex-President Rawlings.
The Party entreats Parliament to begin a discussion on a Presidential Records Act, which will ensure Presidents to hand over their papers, artifacts, memorabilia and other archives to the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB) for preservation and maintenance when they leave office.
