The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has revealed one of its internal security arrangements ahead of the 2020 general elections.
The party says it will recruit 200,000 youth into its vigilante groups to provide security to its members during 2020 elections across the 275 constituencies in the country.
The NDC Greater Accra Regional Organizer, Anthony Nukpenu, confirmed this on an Accra-based Asempa FM’s afternoon political programme – Eko Si Sen, which was monitored by 24NEWS.NEWS.
The NDC Greater Accra Regional Organizer stressed that in a bid for the party to secure more than five million votes in the 2020 general elections, the 200,000 youth recruitment to provide security for the party is not out of place.
He said the party’s 200,000 private security will be recruited under names such as The Hawks, The Eagles among others, adding that they will perform legitimate duties to the party.
Mr. Nukpenu also confirmed the members of the private security group of the NDC – The Hawks – performed a function under his command recently.
The Hawks are the made up of stoutly-built men, and was officially inaugurated in Kumasi by former President John Dramani Mahama.
Its members ware all black attire with the inscription, ‘The Hawks’ on their chest and at their backs.
But, the Director of Communications for the Ghana Gas Company, Ernest Owusu Bempah, who was on the programme, cautioned the youth not to participate in any recruitment exercise by the NDC.
According to him, the security apparatus in the country will be ready to arrest and prosecute any individual who will engage unlawful acts.
The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has condemned the endorsement of party vigilante groups by the General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Aseidu Nketia.
Mr Aseidu Nketia endorsed the formation of the Hawks, a vigilante group within the party as a “natural response” to the governing New Patriotic Party’s refusal to disband its own vigilante groups.
